Why is it important to have a properly
set up turntable correctly sited?
When your turntable is properly setup, sound quality is maximised,
belt, bearing, stylus, record wear and surface noise is minimised.
Turntables should always be sited on their own level shelf away
from sources of vibration. We can supply suitable equipment shelving
or dedicated turntable wall brackets from £100 each.
How do I add a turntable to my system?
Our turntables start at £230. If your amplifier does not have
a built in phono stage/input we can supply external moving magnet
stages from £60 and moving coil stages from £230.
Vinyl doesn't last and anyway, it's always noisy even if it isn't
scratched, right?
Vinyl is in fact very durable and is really only damaged by heat
which can warp records and scratching or gauging with sharp items.
Stored properly, your records will last almost indefinitely. Although
gauges can't be repaired, mould and muck can be cleaned off to reveal
a clean, quiet surface.
Which sounds best, CD, music files or vinyl, after all, it's the
same recording?
Vinyl records are potentially better than CDs or digital music files
as they contain more information. In fact, vinyl records contain
more information than even the best turntables can resolve. However,
this does not mean CD players or media players are incapable of
good sound or that they sound the same as each other.
A properly setup and correctly sited turntable with clean vinyl
in good condition will equal, and then outperform CD and digital
music files by an ever increasing margin as price increases.
You can't buy new records anymore and older records are always worn
out aren't they?
You can buy new vinyl and the quality is now better than ever! New
records may not be in every High Street Store, but a quick search
on line produces a surprising choice available via mail order. Older
records can be damaged or worn out if played often enough on a badly
setup turntable!
Most damage occurs at the top of the record groove due to a badly
aligned stylus not being able to track deep into the groove. Some
older records are of course are a lost cause, but most can be at
least improved if not transformed once the record is cleaned. A
good quality stylus when correctly aligned is able to retrieve information
from the undamaged deeper part of the groove and you'd be amazed
by the lack of surface noise and the overall sound quality.
